The smallest version worth shipping is smaller than you think

The hardest part of shipping the first version isn't the building. It's the cutting. Every solo founder I work with arrives with a feature list that they describe as the minimum, and every single time the minimum is smaller. Usually by a lot.

The reason is that minimum is a word founders use to describe the smallest thing they'd be proud of, not the smallest thing that proves the idea. Those are different things. Pride is about how you feel about the product. Proof is about whether the thing you built actually does what you thought it would do for the person you built it for. You can ship something you aren't proud of and still get the proof, and the proof is the only thing that matters in week one.

The test I run with founders is this. If you imagine one specific user, on one specific day, getting one specific job done with your product, what's the absolute least you need to build to make that moment happen. Not the moment plus onboarding. Not the moment plus settings. Not the moment plus a dashboard that shows them they did the thing. Just the moment itself. That's the minimum. Everything else is a feature you're adding because cutting it would feel bad, not because the moment can't happen without it.

The cost of cutting wrong is small. You ship a thinner version, someone tells you the one thing they actually needed, you add it, you ship again. The cost of cutting wrong in the other direction is enormous. You build for two extra months, you ship a product that does too much, and now you have no idea which part is the part anyone cares about because everything is tangled together.

If you can't bring yourself to ship the smallest version, ship a smaller one anyway. You won't regret the speed. You'll regret the months.

This connects to a question I answer in depth: How do I validate a product idea before building it and What should I build next as a solo founder.
